Leslie Daher: A Summer at Camp Bob

Hello! My name is Leslie Daher. This summer I worked at a wilderness camp on Vancouver Island. The camp is called Camp Bob.

I was a counsellor and a program director there. It was so much fun!  It is really a blessing to be such an impact in a child's life. You are always that child's counsellor, forever. The children remember you and remember what you taught them and how you interacted with them. I had a camper from last year come up to me this summer and really affirm me in that area. Her name is Melissa. She said, "Leslie, you're my favourite leader! You were the only person I ever let pray for me." Then she gave me a huge hug and went on her way, leaving me dumbfounded.

God really works in my life through these children. He shows me that anything is possible and that trusting him with my whole heart is one of the most important steps to becoming closer to Him. Each morning, God would just fill me up with his strength and power and wisdom. When I felt like I couldn't keep going from sheer exhaustion, I would get this amazing jolt of energy. It was like God was a very strong cup of coffee, just filling me with joy!

I was able to learn the power of prayer. Prayer is not only helpful for the person being prayed for, but also for the person praying! It's as if the Holy Spirit is in you, pouring out His words through you. It's amazing! I hadn't felt the power of prayer like that before! I quite like it!

This summer God has really been tugging on my heart to just be real. To be the person He made me, not who I necessarily want to be. And being real, meant that I had to give up a lot. I learned to fully love myself and realize that who I am is enough. I am enough. I don't need to look a certain way, I don't need to shave my legs all the time! I can go for a week at camp without showering and still know that God will love me and so will all the rest of His children! (Camp Bob is very rustic. There are no showers or bathrooms. We have outhouses and a lake. If we want to wash our hair or have a sponge bath, we have to heat up the water and go to a sink! We cook over a fire and often eat ashes with our food! I loved it!)

I love seeing campers at the beginning of the week, kind of suspicious and "tough". Then at the end of the week, they are praising God and joining in on worship. It is so amazing to see God change their hearts! It's even more amazing when God chooses you to be a part of that change. Being able to tell campers about the love of God and the ultimate sacrifice never gets old for me! Witnessing is like having the Lord right beside me. It's fantastic!

I would encourage everyone to be a counsellor for at least one year! Camp changes people for the better, and you can never get away from our Lord, Jesus Christ! What a cool concept eh?! If anyone would like to know more about Camp Bob, just let me know! My email is camp_blossom@hotmail.com. I would love to introduce you to Camp Bob.
